No, really – Haitians are eating dirt. Fucking dirt?!?!?!?

The hand of a woman is covered in mud as she makes mud cookies on the roof of Fort Dimanche, once a prison, in Port-au-Prince, Friday, Nov. 30, 2007.

First let me just say that this is the reason we, the richest nation in the world, have immigration issues. People aren’t coming here to steal our jobs and lazily exploit our “entitlement programs”; they come here because they don’t want to eat fucking dirt anymore. They just want honest work, honest pay and for Christ’s sake, honest food.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, it makes me sad to read this:

Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt

By JONATHAN M. KATZ

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — It was lunchtime in one of Haiti’s worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti’s poorest can’t afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country’s central plateau.

The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.

“When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day,” Charlene said. Her baby, named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking even thinner than the slim 6 pounds 3 ounces he weighed at birth.

One reporter was brave enough to eat a Haitian dirt cake:

A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours, an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.

Can you blame people emigrating from literally dirt-poor countries by any means necessary? Would you give a flying flip about immigration laws if you ate dirt three meals a day while nursing a child? Some answer that we in America can’t help everyone. Why should we be the promised land? Why can’t these governments take care of their own people? The truth, if anyone is willing to engage the facts and not oversimplify the situation, is that America is partly responsible for the terrible economic conditions in many Caribbean and Latin American countries.

Poor nations seek relief from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, which are controlled by the US and other western economic hegemonic nations. In exchange for loans, the borrowing nations must agree to structural adjustment programs that liberalize their economies; this basically allows US corporations to enter and flex their immense economic muscle in the poor nations’ markets, leading to corruption and economic exploitation of the nation. The economic stats look good, the US can say “we helped”, but the fundamental material conditions of everyday people rarely improve. If the US didn’t only look out for the economic best interests of its corporations in such deals, if they secured human rights and worked to eliminate the poverty in places like Haiti and Jamaica (and Mexico and Honduras), the people of those countries wouldn’t be so quick to come to your city or town and take up residence. Let people live like humans in their own countries and fewer people will be desperate enough to risk their security and lives to come to our country.

The solution to America’s issue with immigration is not to build some retarded-ass fence, it’s to get people to stop eating shit burgers three times a day and get some real food in their bellies. It’s to promote education in impoverished areas and spread sex-education and contraception so 16-year-old children aren’t nursing babies while being nourished by mud. It’s to guarantee health and security of person to the people who live in such dire economic and politically explosive conditions.

Also worth mentioning, foreign aid to Israel is $2.5 billion, 15-times more than US aid to Haiti. I don’t see any Israelis eating dirt.

  1. I say open the gates and let them in. I live in a city that has empty abandoned houses everywhere. The infrastructure here has a capacity to support a much larger population. The current belief that immigration is bad for our country is a myth as far as I’m concerned. We are a nation of immigrants. We should feel ashamed for our attitudes about immigration European countries take in many more immigrants than the US. Regarding eating dirt – read about Russia and Stalin. In Fact there is a book that was recently released that offers a great portrayal of life in Russia during that time period. Child 44 by Tom Robb Smith.

  2. THIS IS A LIE , HAITIANS AREN’T EATING MUD CAKES EITHER MUD PIES. IF you were smart enough. You would Notice THEY ARE MAKING PLATES!!!
Some idiot who doesn’t even understand creole or w.e had started this dam rumor. THIS IS NOT TRUE . THERE ARE NO HAITIANS IN HAITI EATING MUD CAKES. Now each time someone sees a Haitian they start to think of mud cakes. Is that a good thing ? Thanks for promoting that. Also I ain’t Haitian but I’am the truth.! All this are politics dude! and Propaganda.

    • THIS IS A LIE , HAITIANS AREN’T EATING MUD CAKES EITHER MUD PIES.

The guy that posted this comment is dead wrong. We have people going over there on missions trips all of the time. This is as real as it gets. Just because you think it’s a lie doesn’t make it one. I’d suggest you visit the country and see the poverty for yourself prior to shooting your mouth off about the media making it up.

  3. oh yeah and that dude who spoke above me , talking about Joseph stalin and those other stuff of russia. This is all what’s happening with Haiti right now. Also Haiti is going through some problems , which are rich against the poor , even sometimes but barely whites against the blacks. This is annoying the government real bad. Those stupid conflicts are preventing the Haitian government from focusing on Haitian economy. To many crimes and ect in such a small country. If yah can once put your heads together. Just once , trust me you’ll see some major changes. Besides , I see Haiti is going through some good developments , and that’s a good thing . Hope it gets better and better , and also hope the people promote the idea of putting Haiti back up in it’s feet. After that , you can re-consider connecting with your Latin brothers such as Venezuela , Dominican Republic , Cuba , panama , Brazil and all those others. If you do this. The Latino can rise into a big power. Not a hurtful one but a Big Power with a GREAT economy.
That’s all I got to say folks.
ps : I’m Pretty sure what i said don’t make sense , but try to understand. Not willing to re-read this since I got no time.

  4. WHAT EVER THEIR SAY TO HAITI IS A LIAR .HAITI ISTHE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WOLD J ; JUST TO PUT IT DOWN I KNOW YOU DONT LIKE MY COUNTRY THAT WY YOU MESS MY COUNTRY TO LET ME COME HERE WORK LIKE A ESCLAVE.OR

  5. Mr. Katz, F-bomb aside, I have seen the footage with ‘some’ Haitians actually eating these so called cakes, so in part you are telling the truth. While there are many more women who make them (I still don’t understand why centuries later, no one is able to help this country out as far as ‘trade purposes’.), in order to put an extra dollar on the table to get food for their children, can someone tell me why they’re still struggling today?
Also, why does it almost always take a crisis for the ‘out-side world’ to recognize the struggle Haiti is still going through, and be able to help them on a ‘permanent basis’ not just when trouble starts, and after-wards things go right back to the way they were? For This and Jackass: No one is trying to put down your country or your people, just to get folks to realize they (you) should have a chance just like any other country or people.
I would LOVE for Haitians to show the rest of the world their ‘craftsmanship’ (when it comes to building, creating items, etc., the women who make these dirt cakes, if they had the opportunity, could most likely be some of the best bakers around.) and other areas of trade and business that they’re good in. Please know we’re praying for each and every one of them, especially now with the earthquake situation.

  6. I knew about Haiti yers ago but I must admit I forgot it’s exact location until Haiti had its humongous quake. I never knew the finer points like making and eating mud cookies.

That reporter never ate the cookie he palmed it. He just couldn’t get past the unsanutry conditions. The woman selling it wiped something else and never washed her hands. The buckets were so stained with filth even apig would think twice of eating a cookie made from
    within.

The U.S. is a country of plenty. They reject many types of nuts, rice , and fruits for size, coloration, imperfect shape. Let’s get them and the Haitians will be able to Make Haitian mud cookies they can be proud of. And the taste would be much superior to the Mylanta and Tums taste if you know what I mean.

  7. What other country makes mud cookies using dirt? We can have a bake-off! Of course we’ll have to send them a lab to determine the real contents.

Imagine what humans can eat and for all I know, they might even be very benificial. All those little pebbles, veggie debris, etc. might be what the human insteines need to clean out the system.

Any ways. lets be considrate because right now the airfield is a total mess, there might not be a port to go to, etc. I suggest everyone wait for another 2 -3 years before thinking of this subject again.

  8. To all you people who feel the great need to save everyone who they feel is a little less fortunate than themselves, I say fine, do so, but do it on your own dime, take them into your own home, take food from your own child’s mouth to feed them, but do not expect the rest of American society to be forced to support your ideals. If your children are hungry and cold, I guarantee you that you will not give up what little you have to support the Haitians. America has millions of its own children who are hungry, cold, and without health care (myself included), and not one penny of tax dollars should be spent on outsiders until every American has what it needs first. I’m sick and tired of footing the bill for every failed government in the world. Eating dirt???? You have to be a damn fool to believe that they are actually eating dirt…How gullible can you possibly be????? Wake up already!

  9. I AM A BAHAMIAN-I VISITED HAITI IN 2007-I MARRIED A HAITIAN MAN-TRUST ME -THIS IS SOOO TRUE-SOME HAITIANS DONT WANT TO ADMITT IT BECAUSE THEY ARE FEELING GUILTY ABOUT THEIR BIG GREAT LIFE IN THE USA-AND ARE NOT CHECKING FOR THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS-THATS WHY THEY ARE ASHAMED NOW-AND THEY TRY TO SAY IT IS NOT TRUE-BUT IT IS-AND I CRY FOR HAITIANS -I WISHH I WAS RICH-I WUD GIVE TO THOSE PEOPLE BEFORE I GIVE TO MY OWN-please dont get me wrong-i love haiti and haitians-some of the country and not all of the people there are not like this-but it is was it is-now lets get together and do something about it.
